Northside’s Newest Project

Many students are raising questions regarding the construction zone located next to our football field and the gym. We have all been guessing what the construction may be for: A swimming pool? A freshman academy? A watch tower for Coach Laney?  Not quite.

In 2009, the citizens of Muscogee County approved a SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) for education to raise money for capital projects. Due to rapid growth here at Northside, one of those projects will be a 20-classroom addition to our school. This project, which costs an estimated $5.4 million, will replace portables 11-16, and will eventually replace portables 1-10. The new classrooms will also house three new science labs and a new marketing classroom. Mr. Harper, Northside’s drama teacher, expects the transition from his notoriously cluttered portable to a classroom to be a hectic one. “I am hoping my new classroom will have the space a theatre classroom needs which is something my portable doesn’t have now.”

Along with our new territory will come new authority. “There will be a new assistant principal and a new secretary for that part of the school.” Mr. Wilson, our principal, says. Students are also looking forward to extra space in the hallways. “A lot of students are going to be in the new building going to their classes, so the hallway traffic in the main building won’t be as congested.” Says sophomore Savannah Wassmer.

The new classrooms are expected to be ready by the semester break of the 2012-2013 school year. Northside’s students and teachers are excited to have the opportunity for these new classrooms and are eager to see what these new changes will bring.
